Tri-um-vi-rate of Darkness to Light
Colossians 1:13
“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”
From Darkness to Light
The human journey is marked by a transition, a divine rescue mission. Colossians 1:13 describes this transformation: a deliverance from the power of darkness into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son. This is not just a shift in location but a profound change in governance, allegiance, and identity.
Darkness is not merely the absence of light; it is a domain, a power, and a system under the control of Satan. This realm is characterized by sin, sickness, and spiritual death—the triumvirate of darkness. In contrast, the kingdom of light is defined by life, fellowship, and joy—the triumvirate of divine blessings. Understanding this contrast reveals the depth of God’s deliverance and the victory available to every believer.
1. The Power of Darkness
God Hates Darkness
Darkness is not from God. While God created physical darkness as part of the natural order, spiritual darkness originates from Satan. 1 John 1:5 declares, “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” Darkness is antithetical to God’s nature.
When humanity fell into sin, we came under the dominion of darkness—a realm ruled by Satan. This darkness encompasses sin, deception, sickness, and death. It is a realm where the light of truth is obscured, leaving people enslaved, blind, and hopeless.
Darkness Has Power
Colossians 1:13 refers to the “power of darkness.” This power is not a mere metaphor but a real and destructive force. Satan operates within this darkness, wielding his influence over those who are spiritually blind.
-
Sin: Darkness enslaves through sin, separating humanity from God. Sin blinds people to the truth, leaving them lost and condemned.
-
Sickness: Physical and emotional afflictions often have their roots in the spiritual darkness that entered the world through sin.
-
Death: The ultimate consequence of darkness is eternal separation from God.
Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, authorities, and powers of this dark world.
The Government of Satan
Before salvation, humanity is under Satan’s government. This government is oppressive, leading people into greater bondage through sin, sickness, and death. Acts 26:18 emphasizes the need for deliverance, stating that Christ came to “open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.”
Application: Are you living under the oppressive power of darkness, or have you experienced the liberating rule of Christ?
2. The Triumvirate of Darkness: Sin, Sickness, and Death
The three pillars of Satan’s kingdom—sin, sickness, and death—represent the full extent of his destructive power.
Sin: The Root of Darkness
Sin is the entry point for darkness. It separates humanity from God and plunges people into spiritual blindness. Romans 3:23 declares, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Without God’s intervention, sin keeps people bound in guilt and shame, unable to experience true freedom.
Sickness: A Weapon of Oppression
Sickness is a manifestation of the brokenness introduced by sin. While not all sickness is directly caused by sin, it exists because of the fallen nature of the world. Jesus came to reverse this curse, as evidenced by His healing ministry. Matthew 8:17 states, “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
Death: The Ultimate Consequence
Death is the culmination of Satan’s work. It is both physical and spiritual, leading to eternal separation from God. Hebrews 2:14 reveals that Jesus came to destroy the one who holds the power of death—Satan—so that we might no longer live in fear of it.
Application: Are you still living under the triumvirate of sin, sickness, and death, or have you embraced the life Christ offers?
3. The Power of Light
God’s Deliverance
Colossians 1:13 celebrates the believer’s deliverance from darkness. This is not a self-achieved escape but a divine rescue. God, through Christ, breaks the chains of sin, heals our diseases, and restores us to life.
-
From Sin to Righteousness: 2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
-
From Sickness to Healing: Isaiah 53:5 proclaims, “By His stripes we are healed.”
-
From Death to Life: John 5:24 assures us, “Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
The Triumvirate of Light: Life, Fellowship, and Joy
The kingdom of light is characterized by three divine blessings:
-
Life: Jesus is the source of eternal life. John 12:46 declares, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness.” Life in Christ is abundant and eternal, breaking the chains of death.
-
Fellowship: Light enables fellowship with God and with one another. 1 John 1:7 states, “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”
-
Joy: The kingdom of God is a place of joy. Psalm 16:11 declares, “In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Joy is the natural result of living in God’s light.
Application: Are you experiencing the fullness of life, fellowship, and joy that comes from living in the light?
4. The Deliverance Available Now
A Call to Turn from Darkness
Acts 26:18 highlights the urgency of turning from darkness to light. This is not just a moral decision but a spiritual transformation. Turning to God requires repentance—a conscious decision to leave behind the works of darkness and embrace the light of Christ.
The Good News of Redemption
John 12:46 provides the assurance that Christ’s light is available to all who believe: “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness.” Redemption is not a future promise but a present reality for those who place their faith in Him.
Application: Have you fully embraced the light of Christ, or are you still holding on to areas of darkness in your life?
Walking in the Light
The triumvirate of darkness—sin, sickness, and death—represents Satan’s power to enslave and destroy. But Christ has overcome. Through His death and resurrection, He has delivered us into the kingdom of light, where life, fellowship, and joy reign.
To walk in this light requires intentionality:
-
Reject Sin: Confess and turn away from anything that separates you from God.
-
Embrace Healing: Trust in Christ’s power to heal not only your body but your heart and soul.
-
Celebrate Life: Rejoice in the eternal life and fellowship you now have in His Kingdom.
The deliverance from darkness to light is not just a doctrinal truth; it is a lived reality. Step into the light today and experience the fullness of life in Christ.
Final Thought:
You were created for the light, not for darkness. Christ has made the way—walk in it, and let His light shine through you to others.
